A Casual Dinner at The National
I’m sure I’ve said it before, but Athens is full of really great places to eat. Last weekend, when Lacey came to town, we decided to head downtown and grab dinner at The National. The atmosphere can’t be beat at this unique little spot that serves Mediterranean-inspired dishes. And, the menu changes depending on the season, since they’re supportive of local farmers.
Friday nights are typically pretty crowded anywhere downtown. We got lucky and were able to snag seats at the bar. Both of us ordered an Athena Paradiso (a seasonal beer from the brewery across the street), and we got a cheese plate to snack on until we decided on dinner. I can’t say I’ve every ordered the same dish here, which I’m guilty of at many of my favorite local restaurants. And since their menu changes seasonally, there’s always something new to try.
I picked the chicken dish from the menu, while Lacey ordered a vegetable pizette. My plate was a perfect portion. And aside from a personal distaste for chicken on the bone, everything about my dinner was delicious. The vegetable pizette looked fresh and filling. I’ll certainly be tempted to order one on my next visit, wouldn’t that make a lovely little lunch?
