I came into the podcast game really late. I mean, I’m pretty sure I never listened to a single podcast until I started Serial this past winter. That one opened the podcast door for me and now I’m subscribed to quite a few that I like to listen to while I’m working. There are TONS of podcasts out there, so I’ve decided to share my Podcast Crushes of the moment once a month or so. There will definitely be a big subject range of podcasts listed because I like to have a variety to listen to. I’m looking forward to finding out about new ones to add to my list, but for now I’ll start with these:
1. Serial Serial is a podcast from the creators of This American Life, and is hosted by Sarah Koenig. Serial tells one story – a true story – over the course of an entire season. Each season, we’ll follow a plot and characters wherever they take us. And we won’t know what happens at the end until we get there, not long before you get there with us. Each week we bring you the next chapter in the story, so it’s important to listen to the episodes in order, starting with Episode 1.
Serial was my entertainment while riding in the car to Miami for New Years and the Orange Bowl. Each time an episode ended, I couldn’t wait to listen to the next one. I guess you’d call it a “true crime” podcast, but either way it is a truly fascinating story once you get hooked. It’s not scary at all, which some people may think from the name, but a true investigation into the murder of a high school girl. When I finished Serial, I definitely went around reading all kinds of articles about Adnan’s case. (And get excited because there are going to be two more seasons!)
2. Being Boss A podcast for creative entrepreneurs.
I’m listening to this one slowly, soaking up all that good information. These ladies really know what they’re talking about and it’s advice that any of us lady creatives can take to heart. As someone who hopes to one day have my own business, I can’t recommend this one enough. They cover everything from professionalism to redefining your dream job to collaboration and communication. Anything you might want to know about “being boss,” I’m pretty sure you will hear it in this podcast.
3. Here Be Monsters Here Be Monsters is a growing community of radio producers, artists, and listeners who are interested in pursuing their fears and facing the unknown. We tend to produce pieces about science, drugs, death, religion, politics, and medicine. But seriously, just dig through the archive a bit and you’ll find shows about nearly everything.
I just started listening to Here Be Monsters, but I think I listened to about five episodes while I was working today. Some of them are a little bit eerie, some are a little intense, and some are just strange. The producer and host, Jeff Emtman, has a very soothing, calm voice and I think that some of the interviews he conducts and stories that he reads become more slightly odd and fascinating because of it. One of my favorite episodes so far was Of Maps and Monsters, which, I think, is the second episode. I haven’t enjoyed every single episode, I know I’ve skipped two or three, but overall I’m definitely finding that I like this one.
Alright, what are your favorite podcasts of the moment?
